An Internet meme, more commonly known simply as a meme (/miːm/ MEEM), is a type of meme which is spread via the Internet, often through social media platforms. Colloquially, the term may also refer specifically to pieces of media that take the general format of such memes, traditionally but not exclusively combining image macros with a concept or catchphrase.[1] These traditional types of memes can be very simplistic, often featuring a single word or phrase. In some cases these words and phrases contain intentional misspellings (such as locates) or incorrect grammar (such as doge and "All your base are belong to us"). However, in more recent times, memes have evolved from simple image macros with text to more elaborate things such as challenges, GIFs and viral sensations. Their evolution has made it uncommon to go anywhere nowadays without seeing some form of meme. These small movements tend to spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, or news sources. They may relate to various existing Internet cultures or subcultures, often created or spread on various websites. Fads and sensations tend to grow rapidly on the Internet because the instant communication facilitates word of mouth transmission. Some examples include posting a photo of people lying down in public places (called "planking") and uploading a short video of people doing the Harlem Shake.
The word meme was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene as an attempt to explain how ideas replicate, mutate and evolve (memetics).[2] The concept of the Internet meme was first proposed by Mike Godwin in the June 1993 issue of Wired. In 2013, Dawkins characterized an Internet meme as being a meme deliberately altered by human creativity—distinguished from biological genes and his own pre-Internet concept of a meme, which involved mutation by random change and spreading through accurate replication as in Darwinian selection.[3] Dawkins explained that Internet memes are thus a "hijacking of the original idea", the very idea of a meme having mutated and evolved in this new direction.[4] Furthermore, Internet memes carry an additional property that ordinary memes do not: Internet memes leave a footprint in the media through which they propagate (for example, social networks) that renders them traceable and analyzable.[5]

SFI memes are designed to work the same way, but with a specific purpose—which is to help you sponsor new affiliates.

For example, let's say you post the meme image below on your Facebook page:

Readers see your SFI meme (at Facebook, on Twitter, in your e-mail signature, etc.) and ask questions about residual income. Discussion ensues. Someone asks how THEY can get residual income...and there's your opening. You provide them with your SFI Gateway.  NOTE: You may want to do this privately, because many social media sites will block your Gateway URL or otherwise taint it.

We strongly encourage you to NOT be aggressive when using memes. Remember, meme's are supposed to be fun and casual! Just post one of our fun memes using the directions below and let discussion happen naturally. Posting a big marketing pitch will likely be counterproductive. Simply let the meme do the work (or most of the work at least) and be ready to respond when interest is generated. Have fun with them!

Follow the simple instructions below to access and download your SFI meme marketing aids. First, though, be aware that SFI memes differ from your other SFI marketing aids in two big ways:

1. Unlike SFI banners and many of our other marketing aids where you are required to use only our HTML, meme images must be downloaded to your computer.  You will then upload them wherever you wish to use them.

2. Do NOT link the meme images to anything. Memes are not designed to be clicked on but to get attention, spark discussions, and encourage others to share the meme image--helping you sponsor new affiliates.

TO ACCESS AND DOWNLOAD SFI MEMES:

1. Go to the Marketing Aids section at your SFI Marketing Center and select "Meme" from the Type dropdown menu.

2. Right-click the meme image of your choice and choose the "Download Image" option in your browser to save to your computer. TIP: You may want to create a special folder on your computer desktop in which to save your Meme images for easy reference when uploading images later.

3. Upload your meme image wherever you wish to use it (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, e-mail signatures, personal blogs and Websites, etc.). Again, if you're using the meme on social media, do NOT link the meme image to anything.
